Matthew graduated with a PhD in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics from Keele University, focussing on mechanotransduction in bone cells. Matthew undertook postdoctoral research projects at Cardiff University studying UV-induced DNA damage in fibroblasts and subsequently creating reporter cell lines to study wound healing in diabetic patients (in the Dept. of Pathology and Dental School respectively). The range molecular and biological skills learned were then utilised for several years in a technical lab management/stewarding role in the Centre for Synthetic Biology & the Bioeconomy at Newcastle University prior to recently joining the Kawamura Lab. Outside of the lab, Matthew takes a keen interest in ice hockey.
