Hilal obtained her BSc degree in molecular biology and genetics at Istanbul Technical University. Then, she moved to Germany for her MSc degree in molecular medicine at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. In 2013, she joined Lack Laboratory at Koç University to obtain her PhD in Molecular Biology and Genetics. She worked under supervision of Assist. Prof. Nathan A. Lack to characterize epigenetic mechanisms in the development of castration resistant prostate cancer. During her PhD, she worked as a visiting student for Dr. Akane Kawamura’s group at University of Oxford. After her graduation, she joined Dr. Kawamura’s group as post-doctoral researcher.
Her research interests include biochemical and cellular characterisation of epigenetic regulators in cancer. Outside the lab, she is also interested in languages. In addition to Turkish, English, German and Italian, learning Greek is included in her future plans. She also likes travelling, reading, solving Sudoku and Latin dances.
